Many communities are not equipped to handle emergencies
and require assistance to recover after a major event, or to prepare for large scale incidents such as hazardous materials incidents or large fires. Providing hope, confidence, and support through training and education, Firefighters Without Borders is comprised of professional firefighters, emergency medical personnel and related staff who volunteer to reach out to give a “hand up” to fire departments in many areas of the world.
THE MISSION OF FIREFIGHTERS WITHOUT BORDERS IS: “TO PROTECT LIFE, PROPERTY & THE ENVIRONMENT IN COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD BY PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL TRAINING, EDUCATION, RESOURCES, & SUPPORT”.
Created in 2002, Firefighters without Borders (FWB) began as a tribute to a fallen crew member and passionate firefighter, Kevin Bailey. Combined with the tragedy of 911, this organization understands that sometimes when the alarm goes off, it could be the fire department experiencing the major emergency, and not the community they serve.
Firefighters without Borders is comprised of a volunteer Board of Directors and volunteers. All activities are supported by fundraising programs.
WHAT WE DO
Whether it is training firefighters in Mexico in trench rescue techniques, or providing donated bunker gear, boots, clothing and equipment to a dedicated and grateful team of Bomberos in Peru, Firefighters without Borders reach out to bring hope and confidence to fellow firefighters. We believe preventing the fire from happening in the first place is a proactive approach for community safety. Some fire departments do not have the resources to deal effectively with any emergency, so a strong public education and fire prevention program is a key program delivered by Firefighters Without Borders. This is a holistic approach to public safety, and saves lives by preventing a tragedy.
Firefighters enjoy special bonds and a common language through shared experiences dealing with day to day tragedies in the communities for which they serve. Interpreters assist us to deliver programs for firefighters in nations across the globe.
HOW WE DO IT
Once a community with a fire department in need of training and equipment is identified, Firefighters without Borders conducts a needs assessment with the community and fire department leaders to determine the type and scope of training required.
Firefighters from various cities form teams in a group as small as 4 or 5 or up to 10, depending on the type of training and education required by a fire department. The team travels to the village or town and spend several days conducting intensive training in fire service competencies such as auto extrication, hazardous materials response, emergency medical programs and public education.
